TL;DR. A movement arguing AI progress should be accelerated, not slowed — acceleration as a moral duty against stagnation, in open opposition to AI-safety alignment efforts.

Technical Definition

A movement arguing AI progress should be accelerated, not slowed — acceleration as a moral duty against stagnation, in open opposition to AI-safety alignment efforts.

How it works

E/acc — effective accelerationism — grew from 2023 Twitter culture into a named faction in the AI debate by 2026. Its core claim borrows from physics-flavored philosophy: civilization decays without growth, technological progress is the engine of human flourishing, and attempts to slow AI through regulation or pausing are civilizational self-harm. It stands in direct opposition to AI-safety and alignment communities, whose 'doomer' framing E/acc adherents reject as unfalsifiable pessimism — the P(doom) numbers safety researchers quote are, in E/acc terms, a category error. The movement's influence shows up less in labs' research agendas than in public rhetoric and regulatory politics, where 'accelerationist' has become a standard label for the anti-restrictions side of every AI-policy fight.
