TL;DR. A test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

Technical Definition

A test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

How it works

Proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, the Turing Test involves a human interrogator interacting with both a human and a machine via text-based communication. If the interrogator cannot reliably distinguish the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test, demonstrating human-level intelligence. While influential, its validity and sufficiency as a measure of true intelligence are subjects of ongoing debate in AI research.
