TL;DR. The cost discipline of deciding how many hidden reasoning tokens a task deserves — trading answer quality against latency and per-call price.
Technical Definition
The cost discipline of deciding how many hidden reasoning tokens a task deserves — trading answer quality against latency and per-call price.
How it works
Reasoning models charge for the hidden 'thinking' they do before answering, and the bill scales with how hard they think. Reasoning token economics is the practice of budgeting that thinking: routing trivial requests to zero-thought fast paths, giving mid-tier tasks a capped reasoning budget, and reserving extended deliberation for high-value decisions. Teams instrument cost-per-correct-answer rather than cost-per-call, since a cheap wrong answer is the most expensive kind. By late 2026, 'thinking budget' became a standard API parameter and a standard line item in AI unit economics.
