TL;DR. Recurring and statistically significant subgraph patterns found in complex networks.

Technical Definition

Recurring and statistically significant subgraph patterns found in complex networks.

How it works

Network motifs are small, recurring patterns of connections (subgraphs) that appear significantly more often in a given network than would be expected by chance. They are considered fundamental building blocks that can reveal important structural and functional properties of complex systems, such as biological networks, social networks, or the internet. Identifying network motifs helps in understanding the organization and behavior of these systems.
