Technical Definition

A drive in agents to act based on the inherent 'interestingness' or novelty of experiences, akin to curiosity.

How it works

Intrinsic motivation in AI agents refers to a drive to act that stems from the information gained from the action itself, rather than external rewards. This is analogous to curiosity and exploration in humans. An agent with intrinsic motivation might seek out novel or surprising situations simply because they offer new information or reduce uncertainty, driving learning and discovery.
