Technical Definition
Optimizing content so it is preferentially cited and recommended by generative AI assistants.
How it works
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also called AI Optimization (AIO), is the practice of structuring and publishing content so that generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity — surface, cite, and recommend it. GEO shifts focus from keywords and backlinks to entities, factual density, source authority, and machine-readable structure (schema.org, clear citations, unambiguous claims), because LLM-based answer engines rank sources by credibility rather than link graphs alone.
