TL;DR. A system characterized by a finite or countable number of distinct states, often modeled using graphs.
Technical Definition
A system characterized by a finite or countable number of distinct states, often modeled using graphs.
How it works
A discrete system is one that can only exist in one of a finite set of states, or a countable infinity of states. Unlike continuous systems, its state changes occur at distinct points in time or in response to specific events. Computers and digital circuits are prime examples of discrete systems, often modeled using finite-state machines.
