TL;DR. Digital celebrities: AI-generated clones of real — often deceased — stars used in ads, cameos and social content.

Technical Definition

Digital celebrities: AI-generated clones of real — often deceased — stars used in ads, cameos and social content.

How it works

Delebs (digital celebrities) are the on-screen product of necromarketing and, more broadly, the licensed or synthetic recreation of famous personas. A deleb can sell perfume decades after its human model's death, greet fans on a livestream, or star in a regional campaign the real star never filmed. The word spread through the advertising and creator economy in late 2026 as the industry split into sanctioned delebs (estates licensing likeness and voice under contract) and unsanctioned ones (pure mimicry, increasingly litigated). Delebs sit at the intersection of voice cloning, video generation and identity law, and they normalize a question society is still answering: when a performance can be manufactured indefinitely, what does consent — and stardom — even mean?
