TL;DR. A simple model or metric used as a reference point to evaluate the performance of more complex models.

Technical Definition

A simple model or metric used as a reference point to evaluate the performance of more complex models.

How it works

A baseline is a standard or reference point against which the performance of a new or more complex model is measured. It is often a simpler, well-understood model or a heuristic that provides a minimum performance expectation. Establishing a baseline helps quantify the actual improvement gained by developing a sophisticated model.
