TL;DR. An economy in which AI agents transact, negotiate and exchange services with businesses and with each other.

Technical Definition

An economy in which AI agents transact, negotiate and exchange services with businesses and with each other.

How it works

The agent economy is the macro frame for what happens when the counterparties in commerce include software: agents shopping for the best deal, negotiating service terms, hiring other agents, and settling payment through machine-native rails. It sits downstream of the plumbing — identity (who is acting and for whom), permissions (what they may commit), and payment protocols built for agentic checkout. The term carries an open empirical question that dominated discussion into November 2026: how much real economic volume actually flows agent-to-agent versus agent-assisted human transactions? Either way, businesses now design pricing, product data and support with machine counterparties in mind, because an increasingly large share of demand arrives as an agent's structured request rather than a person's click.
